 New Friends

“Those who love deeply never grow old; they may die of old age but they die young.” Benjamin Franklin

Their names are Betty, Connie, Ann, Ruth, Arlee and Gloria. Each of them are between 85-95 years of age and live together in an assisted living home in central Orange County. They like each other. No, I sense, even more, they love each other. Four are Catholics, two Protestants. Candise Romero, part of our morning Zoom meeting and Alison/Robin’s Bible Study is their caregiver. She’s a shepherd, nurturing and carrying a mother’s heart, ministering to their physical needs but is also loving on their souls.

She has journeyed through the gospel of John with them. Upon finishing John last week, I joined them in a conference call and answered some questions, then prayed over them. Now Candise is taking them through the book of Acts. They’ve read 6 chapters so far, wrote down questions and then in another conference call on Saturday I answered them.

As we shared, I could feel the love of God for each of these dear ladies.  Their questions were sincere. They joked about their age. Curiosity about God gripped their hearts. This was my second call. And we were becoming friends. And the more they spoke to me the more love welled up in my heart. I thought, “Thank you God for giving me such sweet new friends.” Older. With such a refreshing sense of humor. Tender-hearted. Kind. Lovely. A true gift at a time where little means so much to me.

“When I look at older women’s faces I see great beauty in them. I see the beauty in each crow’s foot because those are the signs of laughter. Dark spots hint at a life lived in the sun. Grey and white hair shines bright and suits our older skin tones well. Our inner beauty makes our eyes sparkle. Every mark tells a story that only we know.”  Rachel Lankesten

Monday’s Scripture: “Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the Word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came and prayed for them to receive the Holy Spirit, for He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.”  Acts 8:14-17

Today’s Prayer: That God would bless the future of Little Church by the Sea, giving great favor, that He would pour out power and wisdom, anointing and grace, supernatural gifts and prophetic insights, such as will be a great blessing to the entire city. That God’s Kingdom will be released in revolutionary ways. Through Little Church by the Sea. This precious jewel. This city set on a hill. A little hill, but none-the-less, perched there on Legion and Through Street. With a legacy. So much good. So many lives touched. Such healing found there. And if you listen carefully, you can hear God’s voice in the distant sounds of the waves.
