Becoming like Christ for the sake of others

A note from your pastor: July 8, 2020

Hello, my friends!

As I’m preparing the sermon for this Sunday, I cannot think of a better Psalm for us to be studying.  Psalm 131 is one of the shortest in the book, coming in at only 3 verses, but there is incredible power in its brevity.  Here’s what it says,

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.

As I read it, I am immediately convicted of what I choose to set my mind on.  So often I’m drawn to situations beyond my control.  But that doesn’t stop me from worrying and overthinking.  I keep diving further and further down the rabbit hole, and the cost to my soul is enormous.

The psalmist calls us to enter into the quiet rest that comes from laying our head upon God’s shoulder.  It is safe and tender.  It is the place of trust and vulnerability.  It is the result that comes by casting our cares upon God.  We can release those things beyond our control and instead experience the calmness that comes when we hope in the Lord.

I want to challenge you to begin to prepare your heart for this Sunday’s message by making this Psalm a daily prayer.  And as you pray, let go of those concerns you are clinging so tightly to.  Let go of the unknowns and instead, enter into the quiet space of intimacy with a God who loves you with a tender embrace.

Tonight at Deeper Walk will be looking back on Psalm 130 and discussing how to enter into the abiding presence of God through a proper fear of the Lord.  As we unpack the Psalm further, we are invited to enter into the reality of God’s steadfast love.

I sure hope you can join us!  We’ll be meeting together at 7 pm in Fellowship Hall and on Zoom.  The Zoom meeting ID is 652 073 534 and the password 424026. See you then!

Love you guys!
Jeff
