Annie wandered away up the field toward a little old cottage. She knew Thomas Crann was at work there and found him busy roughcasting the outside of it with plaster.
“You’re busy workin’,” observed Annie.
“Aye, just helpin’ to make a hypocrite,” answered Thomas, with a nod and a smile as he threw a trowel of mortar against the wall.
“What do you mean by that?” asked Annie.
“If ye knew this old place as well as I do,” said Thomas, “You wouldn’t need to ask that question. It should have been pulled down from the riggin’ to the foundation a century ago. An’ here I am putting a clean face on it.”
“It looks well enough,” said Annie.
“I told ye I was makin’ a hypocrite,” and Thomas chuckled.

Sometimes I put a mask on and try to be something I’m not. Sometimes I appear spiritual and alive for God but I can be cold as ice on the inside. Sometimes I exaggerate to make myself look just a tad better. Sometimes I tell half-truths and I don’t always practice what I preach. And I enjoy seeing my name in print, to be thought of as someone important. Jesus never ever did any of the before-mentioned, and I’ve got a really long ways to go to be anything like Him.
