Jeff Tacklind’s message on Psalm 57
Sermon Notes:
Reframing: changing the conceptual and/or emotional viewpoint in relation to which a situation is experienced and placing it in a different frame that fits the “facts” of a concrete situation equally well, thereby changing its entire meaning.
Dysfunctional belief #1: Your qualifications for leadership are your capabilities, talents, appearance, charisma, strength.
Reframed belief: Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
“authority from God is not afraid of challengers, makes no defense, and cares not one whit if it must be dethroned.” Gene Edwards
Dysfunctional belief #2: God helps those that help themselves.
Reframed belief: My authority comes from God alone.
“…he seemed to grasp a deep understanding of the unfolding drama in which he had been caught. He seemed to understand something that few of even the wisest men of his day understood…God wanted a broken vessel.” Gene Edwards
Dysfunctional Belief #3: obedience to God leads to a life of prosperity and comfort.
Reframed belief: Obedience to God leads to a life of deep significance and meaning in God’s eyes.
“If you asked me what it is I know, I would be hard pressed to tell you. All I know is that there is a deep “okayness” to life—despite all the contradictions—which has become even more evident in the silence. Even when much is terrible, seemingly contradictory, unjust, and inconsistent, somehow sadness and joy are able to coexist at the same time.” Richard Rohr
Dysfunctional Belief #4: We live in a world that is ultimately hostile.
Reframed Belief: Ultimate reality is the steadfast love of God.
“Resistance is not a peripheral opponent. It is self-generated and self-perpetuated. Resistance is the enemy within.” Steven Pressfield
Dysfunctional Belief #5: My enemy is out there.
Reframed Belief: My own heart is desperately sick.
Dysfunctional Belief #6: God’s love is dependent on my obedience.
Reframed Belief: God’s love is unchanging, unrelenting, unconditional. It will never fail.
