Becoming like Christ for the sake of others

“I Don’t Want You Anymore” 2/7/17

When I was a junior in high school I was cut from the basketball team for a fight during practice. I went up for a layup and George Pelletier slammed me into the gymnasium wall. I came up swinging. And the next thing I knew I was gone. “Not putting up with that kind of behavior Grant,”  yelled coach Tom. George and I were dismissed. I was stunned. My mom said my life changed that day and not for the better. The pain I felt from that rejection was channeled into a few misspent years. I still grieve the dismissal. Crazy.

I don’t think there is anything tougher than rejection. But all of us have suffered from it. How much pain has been inflicted from words like these, “I don’t want you anymore,” or “what’s wrong with you, or worse, “I’ve found somebody else.”

When it comes to rejection, no one has suffered more of it than Jesus. Rejected by the religious leaders, rejected by His people, rejected by his closest friends, then came the ultimate rejection – crucifixion. Yet while we may think rejection is terrible, for the believer it is often deceivingly wonderful.

Without Jesus’ rejection we have no salvation. His rejection is our redemption, our glorious reconciliation with God. But how can rejection be good for you and me? Here’s why…

  • Man’s rejection is often God’s protection, such as being spurned by a potential spouse who may have made your life miserable for years to come.
  • Rejection is not someone wanting you out of their life. Rejection can be someone God wanted out of your future.
  • Many times man’s rejection will lead to God’s redirection. God will often change your life, shift you toward a better course, lead you in a way that makes your life much happier, and all because you’ve been rejected.

So have you suffered rejection? Look at it closely. It may really have been for the best.

 Prayer Focus This Week….

  • Those who suffer from worry, panic attacks, fear, shame and guilt, that they break free from destructive inner feelings
  • Deep healing for those who have suffered from a former abusive relationship
  • Forgiveness and a release from all bitterness and resentment for those who have hurt us in the past
  • Upcoming Guatemala trip for our high schoolers. Over 40 slated to go.
  • Marriages in disarray, reeling from insensitivity, lack of love, and disapproval

Happy Birthday to my Wife – I never cease to be amazed over the talents and creativity that Nikki possesses. She can create about any art, play about any instrument, is super intelligent, and now has developed into a fabulous ballroom dancer.

May the love of God overwhelm all feelings of loneliness, sadness and hurt. May you just rest and find contentment this week.
