The Terrifying Beauty of the Cross
Good Friday: Today we commemorate the passion, suffering, and death of the Lord Jesus. Many believers spend Good Friday in fasting, prayer, repentance, and remembrance of the awful suffering of the Lamb of God. Jesus sacrificed for you. Given up for me. Becoming Redeemer of mankind. The Provider of Salvation. Making Propitiation (satisfying the full debt of sin) for all our iniquities. The Lover of our souls, yielding Himself up.
Why is this day called “Good?” It is good for us because had Jesus not come, there would be no hope for you and me. But He came and we now have hope. The cross was a terrifying death for Jesus, but there was an unseen beauty, a sustaining joy for Jesus while on the cross, described in Hebrews…
“Fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2 You ask, what was that joy? It was you!

Friday’s Prayer Focus: I think remembering all that Jesus did for us and offering up prayers of thanksgiving would be the most important prayer focus we all could have for this day.
Closing Verse: “For Christ also died for sins, once for all, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.” 1 Peter 3:18
