Time. So precious yet so mysterious. It’s elusive. Fleeting. It’s here and then gone. It’s like a hand-breath says the Psalmist. We all have but one brief life to live. A life measured in time. A life marked in time. With but a certain amount of time allotted to us. And whether it is the best of times or the worst of times, it’s the only time we’ve got.
No one has power over time. No one. We can’t control it. We can’t order it to stop. The powerful, the famous, the rich, kings, monarchs, presidents, nations, empires, all of them are helpless before time. Time keeps marching, keeps moving, it’s relentless and cannot be defeated . What was yesterday is gone. You can never get that time back. What is here today is but a gift of time. And tomorrow? Only time will tell.
The wisest people in the world count time as a great treasure. “A stitch in time saves nine,” says the old maxim. In other words, don’t let time slip by. The challenging news is – time flies. The good news is – you are in charge of it. Some people say they waste time but what they are really saying is they don’t understand the gift of time at all.
An early Stones tune was titled “Time Is On My Side.” That is true only if you value it. Ephesians says, “Make the most of your time because the days are evil. .”(5:16) Let us do just that.
