Becoming like Christ for the sake of others

Luke 9:28-36

Jay Grant’s message on Luke 9:28-36

Sermon notes:

Philippians 2:5-8
Have this attitude which was in Christ Jesus, who though He always existed as God, and was equal with God, did not cling to His position, nor His glory but emptied Himself, becoming a man and taking the form of a bondservant. Further, He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.

Luke 9:28-36; (Matthew 17:1-8)
The Glory of the Transfiguration
Jesus Shines Like the Sun

9:28-36 – 28Then about 8 days later, Jesus went up a mountain to pray, taking with him Peter, James and John. 29And as He was praying, He was transfigured, and His face shone like the sun, and His clothing became dazzling white, like the brilliance of lightning. 30Suddenly two men, Moses and Elijah,31who likewise appeared in splendorand glory, were conversing with Him about His coming death, which was to take place in Jerusalem. 32Now Peter, James and John had fallen asleep, but as they woke, they beheld the gloryand majestyof Jesus, Moses and Elijah. 33As Moses and Elijah were about to depart, Peter blurted out, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tabernacles, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah,” not really knowing what he was saying. 34And while Peter was speaking, a cloud overshadowed them, and as the cloud descended and enveloped them, they were seized with terror. 35Then came a voice out of the cloud saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One, listen to Him (yield and obey).” 36When the voice faded, Jesus stood there alone. And the three disciples were silent, and would tell no one what they had seen.

Glory is the indescribable wonder and awe of God. Glory is God’s matchless perfection. Glory is the majestic splendor of God’s very being, His transcendence and His preeminence.  Glory is God’s magnificence, His excellence, His radiance. God’s glory is seen in the brilliance and brightness of the sun. In mighty mountains. In the beauty of animals. In the surging power of the ocean. In the sweeping vastness of the universe. Everywhere there is something beautiful, there is the glory of God. But know this, the glory of God we see on this earth pales in comparison with the glory of God in the heavenly realm.

Moses and the Cloud of Glory
Exodus 24:15-18
And Moses went up the mountain and a cloud covered the mountain. And the glory of the Lord rested on Mt. Sinai and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day The Lord called to Moses from the midst of the cloud. When the sons of Israel at the bottom of the mountain looked up, the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire. And Moses entered into the cloud and was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

1.    Pray more than you do. Why?
a.   Prayer will change your life and the lives of those you pray for                (kids)
b.   It opens the door to endless possibilities, even miracles
c.   Recognize the enemy will do anything to stop you from praying

2.    Ask God to show you His glory. To turn the lights on in your heart.     To reveal more and more of His wonder and beauty to you. Pray:          “God, show me Your magnificence.”

3.    And then worship God as He shows you more of Himself. Send God     a fragrant offering, like a song, like a heartfelt expression of your         love, perhaps in praise; ask God to help you love Him more.
